My story though music has been all about that deep connection and love for music. I connected with the music at a very early age first starting on pots and pans in my parents’ kitchen and then graduating to a toy keyboard at the age of 3. I started my first piano lessons around the age of 4 or 5. The beginning stages of my musical development was simply about nurturing my passion to discover and connect with music – in other words I wasn’t a structured or focused student and wasn’t interested in practicing scales and the like. The fundamentals did make there way in to my playing in these formative years, however, again I was wanting simply write music and play what I heard on the radio and in my own head. It wasn’t until middle school and high school when I started studying percussion, drum-set and tending to my music reading abilities, that I really started progressing and falling deeply in love with my first instrument (piano). While attending music festivals with the high school vocal jazz choir, playing in the jazz band, marching band and doing musicals, I developed a much more mature approach to my music making and what it meant to be a real professional. Once I graduated high school I attended Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle where I was truly committed to my craft and on the path I’m still on today. In college I melded the discipline and fun of creating music on a level I had never experienced before.
Since graduating from Cornish in 2005 I’ve been on the ground running and haven’t ever looked back. My career has taken me down the West Coast on tour with a Jazz Quartet outfit, I’ve taken several trips to places like Colorado, Savannah, Vancouver BC, Europe, New York and Minnesota, and last year I opened for R&B/Soul singer Al Green. I’ve now played most of the large music venues in Seattle including Beneroya Hall, Jazz Alley, Triple Door & Safeco Field and have performed for countless weddings, private parties for all sorts of wonderful people including the Governor Christine Gregoire & Mayor Greg Nickels.
Now, as I write this I’m about to play with some of my dear music friends for a really nice private party on Whidbey Island and starring out at the Puget Sound. It’s hard to imagine where life will take you when you’re young, and even as I sit here now it’s just impossible to tell what’s around the corner. All I can say is that I love what I do, I love this music I create, the people I play with and it’s one heck of an adventure. It’s the rollercoaster ride that I can’t ever seem to get enough of! My one hope is that I may simply share the joy and peace I feel in this music and uplift and carry many of you along with me for the ride of a lifetime!
